EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES

Dr. Roseman stresses the importance of  having a colonoscopy at age 50 or earlier for those in special risk groups.  Individuals with positive family history of colon cancer or polyps or who have Crohn's disease or colitis should have colonoscopy by age 40 and sometimes earlier.  Males and females are equally at risk.  Colonoscopy is performed as an outpatient procedure.  Sedation is used to minimize discomfort.  All patients are carefully monitired during the procedure by skiled endoscopy nusrses.
Hospitalization is not necessary.  Removal of polyps during colonoscopy ususally prevents the later occurrence of colon cancer.  Chances of a cure are as high as 90 percent for cancers detected at an early stage before symptoms occur.
